Computer technology is a powerful source of product innovation and improvement today and it certainly will be so in the future. Computer graphics, in combination with advanced numerical methods, can help in the improvement of many products. One of the best but unexplored examples is in the design of hot air balloons. The balloons are designed using modern CAD tools. However, the design of the 3D shape of the balloon, while being the most important part of the design, is not the end of the design process. "Unwrapping" of the design and preparation of the balloon fabric cut based on the 3D shape is a complex process that is critical for the quality of the design, while still being underestimated and approximated mostly "by hand" or the use of very simple tools. This paper addresses the issue of automatic cut preparation based on the 3D shape and fabric features using means of computer graphics and advanced numerical methods.
