embedded systems, real-time environments
The embedded systems segment is presently undergoing a disruptive innovation process. Different kinds of systems are connected to each other and systems of systems are formed. Boundaries of application domains are alleviated and ad-hoc connections and interoperability play an increasing role. In the present situation formerly closed systems are forced to be opened up. Traditional single-core processors used as computing resources are running out of business. Multi-core and Many-core processors become available whose exploitation for critical and real-time applications is presently happening unsatisfactorily slow, inefficient and expensive. Summarizing, this means their use in certified or qualified environments is challenging. The objective of the EMC2 project is to foster this change of embedded systems through an innovative and sustainable service-oriented architecture approach for mixed criticality applications in dynamic and changeable real-time environments. It is making the big step from basic research to industrial applications. The Artemis Innovation Pilot Project (AIPP) appears to be the best suited vehicle to provide this quantum leap. The EMC2 project builds on the results of previous Artemis, European and National projects and provides the paradigm shift to a new and sustainable system architecture which is suitable to handle open dynamic systems. The following challenges will be addressed and solutions developed to overcome: Dynamic Adaptability in Open Systems Utilization of expensive system features only as Service-on-Demand in order to reduce the overall system cost. Handling of mixed criticality applications under real-time conditions Scalability and utmost flexibility Full scale deployment and management of integrated tool chains, through the entire life cycle This embedded system approach will force the breakthrough and deployment of Multi-Core technology in almost all application domains where real-time and mixed-criticality are an issue such as Aerospace, Automotive, Railway, Shipping, Medical, Industrial factory automation and therefore strengthen the competitiveness of the European Embedded System industry
