A new method developed by FIT researchers will contribute to more realistic videogame and virtual reality environments

A new method developed by researchers from the CPhoto@FIT group can measure the realism of synthetically generated trees. They described the underlying research together with their colleagues from the Purdue University in a paper which was accepted at SIGGRAPH - the most prestigious conference on graphics, which will take place in Tokyo in December. "It is a huge success. We conducted an extensive user study in which 4,000 participants compared over one million pairs of images so that we know which images look the most realistic.  The scores were used to train our neural network, called ICTree. The program is now able to recognise which synthetically generated trees are likely or unlikely to be considered realistic," describes Martin Čadík, one of the authors of the paper. The method can be used by developers of simulators, games, architectural visualisations or virtual reality applications, i.e. wherever synthetically generated 3D trees are used, to design a more realistic environment. More than 400 visitors arrived at the Friday Science Night

More than 400 people visited the Faculty of Information Technology on Friday evening and night. For the Science Night, the Faculty prepared 12 stands, where the visitors could acquaint themselves for example with voice biometrics, internet security, robots and drones or 3D printing. The Czech Television was broadcasting live from FIT (the broadcast is available on the Czech Television website), the Czech Radio made a short report (available in its archives at the 6:52 mark) and a FIT video about machine handwriting recognition is available on the Science Night online platform. Overall, 4,400 people visited BUT that night. Next year of this Europe-wide celebration of science will be held on 30 September 2022.

Dana Hliněná and Jiří Jaroš voted the most popular teachers at FIT

As last year, the awards for the best teachers at the Faculty will go to Dana Hliněná for Bachelor's study programmes and Jiří Jaroš for Master's study programmes. These two teachers have received the most votes from students in the best teacher survey for the academic year 2020/2021. The other names on the make-believe ladder remained the same as well - Tomáš Milet and Jan Černocký for Bachelor's study programmes and Milan Češka and Tomáš Vojnar for Master's study programmes. The competition was announced in June by the Rector of BUT with the support of the Academic Senate; complete results can be found on the BUT website.

Rescue robot RUDA to be seen in the Czech Republic Pavilion at EXPO 2020

The world's fair EXPO 2020 Dubai, which opens on 1 October after a year of delays, will, among others, present a robot from the Faculty of Information Technology. RUDA, a robot for rescuing people in debris and under avalanches, constructed by researchers of the STRaDe@FIT group, will be a part of rotating exhibitions CZ Robot and CZ-EX Machina. The 120-kilogramme robot is now heading to Dubai and will be seen in the Czech Republic Pavilion from 23 October.

World Expo is a prestigious international exhibition designed to showcase industry and culture of individual countries, which has been held since the second half of the 19th century. The Czech exhibition will include a permanent part, which will be integrated into the garden and the pavilion throughout Expo 2020, and a rotating part, which will change every two weeks and will be focused on different individual topics, such as Czech robots. The exhibitions are thematically focused especially on science, research, innovative technologies and modern design.
