Learning objectives
Information literacy: a key skill for life in the digital age
Being information literate does not just mean knowing how to work with a computer or search for something on the Internet. It is a much deeper ability – the ability to recognize when and why we need certain information, how to search for it effectively, critically assess its quality and credibility, and then correctly interpret, process and use it in a specific context.Information literacy is a fundamental building block for orientation in today's world, which is literally flooded with data and information from a variety of sources.
The aim of this subject is to equip students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills that will allow them not only to understand their own information needs, but also to effectively navigate a wide range of available information sources – whether it is classic printed materials, electronic databases, professional articles, or modern digital platforms. Students will learn how to search these sources in a targeted and effective manner, how to recognize the quality and relevance of the information found, how to process it correctly and use it in their academic and professional activities.
Special emphasis is placed on the ethical and legal aspects of working with information - that is, how to use information responsibly, with respect for copyright, citation standards and the principles of academic integrity.
The course also supports the development of the ability to share information in a correct manner, both within professional communication and in a broader social context.
After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:
- Identify and effectively use field-specific information sources, both in traditional printed form and in electronic formats.
- Be familiar with various types of search tools and use them confidently and effectively when solving specific information tasks.
- Master the basics of creating a professional text, including correct citation, structuring and formulation of ideas.
- Gain an overview of the functioning of BUT libraries and libraries in general, including the services they offer and ways to use them effectively.
- Understand the basic ethical and legal issues related to working with information and information technologies, and adopt the principles of responsible information behavior.
