Computer technology is a powerful sourceof product innovation and improvement today and it certainly will be so in thefuture. Computer graphics, in combination with advanced numerical methods, canhelp in the improvement of many products. One of the best but unexploredexamples is in the design of hot air balloons. The balloons are designed usingmodern CAD tools. However, the design of the 3D shape of the balloon, whilebeing the most important part of the design, is not the end of the designprocess. "Unwrapping" of the design and preparation of the balloon fabric cutbased on the 3D shape is a complex process that is critical for the quality ofthe design, while still being underestimated and approximated mostly "by hand"or the use of very simple tools. This paper addresses the issue of automaticcut preparation based on the 3D shape and fabric features using means ofcomputer graphics and advanced numerical methods.
