Description and analysis of IEC 104 Protocol
Protocol IEC 104, industrial IoT, monitoring
IEC60870-5-104 protocol (aka IEC 104) is a part of IEC Telecontrol Equipment andSystems Standard IEC 60870-5 that provides a communication profile for sendingbasic telecontrol messages between two systems in electrical engineering andpower system automation. Telecontrol means transmitting supervisory data anddata acquisition requests for controlling power transmission grids.
IEC104 provides the network access to IEC 60870-5-101 (aka IEC 101) using standardtransport profiles. In simple terms, it delivers IEC 101 messages asapplication data (L7) over TCP, port 2404. IEC 104 enables communicationbetween control station and a substation via a standard TCP/IP network. Thecommunication is based on the client-server model.
Inthis report we give a short overview of related standards and describe IEC 104communication model. The main part of this report is description of the IEC 104protocol, especially APCI and ASDU format. As other monitoring protocols, IEC104 transmits ASDU containing information objects and information elementswhich build the basic part of IEC 104 monitoring. The report is a part of IRONSTONEresearch project focused on security monitoring of IoT networks.
