History
The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT), Brno University of Technology (BUT), was founded on 1st January 2002. It was based on the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DCSE), Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Brno University of Technology. DCSE was established at the Electrotechnical Faculty, Brno University of Technology in 1964 as Department of Automatic Computers. In 1990 it received a new name Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Further development of the Department was connected with the dynamic development in the area of computer science and its applications, called informatics. The ever-increasing demands on the specialists in this area determined the scope and orientation of teaching, research tasks and joint projects, and they also influenced the increase in number of students and staff of the Department. The increasing importance of teaching informatics at the Faculty brought with it the transformation to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (FEECS) in 1993 and the separation of the study plans for informatics immediately after the 1st semester of the common study programme.
At the end of the millenium the importance of the DCSE and the ratio of informatics in teaching exceeded the organizational, technical and financial limits of the department and the transformation of the DCSE into a new faculty was launched. At the same time preparations of new study programmes began: a three-year Bachelor programme and a two-year follow-up Master programme. These two study programmes were accredited in 2001. On 1st January 2002 the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT), BUT, was established. The remaining part was called the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEEC).
The DCSE used to determine the content and key subjects of the study branch called Automatic Computers, later, starting from 1973 of the study branch called Electronic Computers, and finally, starting from 1990 of the study branch Computer Science and Engineering. At present, the DCSE provides education to future experts qualified as Bc. and Ing. in the branch of Computer Science and Engineering and to postgraduate doctoral students in the scientific branch Cybernetics and Informatics (since 2002 called Information Technology). The DCSE is also involved in teaching informatics and computer science for other study lines (of the future FECT). Besides equipping specialists with the necessary hardware and software knowledge, the staff of the DCSE take part in scientific and research projects, both in basic and applied research.
